Rooster Can’t Cock-a-Doodle-Doo

When Rooster wakes up with a sore throat and can’t cock-a-doodle-doo, he enlists the help of the hens, the cows, the sheep, and the pigs to wake up Farmer Ted, who is sleeping the day away without Rooster to wake him up. By the time they devise a way to wake up the farmer it’s so late that they fear he won’t be able to finish all his chores. They all pitch in to gather the eggs, milk the cows, shear the sheep, and slop the pigs while Rooster rests. They end the day all tired out, but with Rooster feeling much better and ready to crow again the next morning.

Usually when I go to the library I have an idea of what books I want to get for the kids ahead of time, but I stumbled across this book by accident and it was a great find. The writing is witty and the pictures are funny. It is a simple story about working together to get chores done faster. It’s also written in such a way that it is easy to use a different voice for each character when you read it aloud, which I highly recommend. It makes it so much more fun for everybody! The age range for this book is listed as 4+, but my 3 year old loved it. The subject matter is not at all gender specific so it would be equally enjoyable for both boys and girls. We both really enjoyed it, and I think any child in the 3-6 year age range would probably enjoy it too.
