Books in Progress: What I’m Reading Right Now – July 2017

This month I only have a couple of books in progress to mention because the majority of my reading time in last few weeks has been spent reading to my girls. The library summer reading program is drawing to a close Monday and motivation is high to read enough books for a couple more spins on the prize wheel! So we borrowed ten books from the library and combed through our home library for titles we haven’t read in a while. We have preselected stacks set out for Saturday and Sunday that must be completed in order to reach the spin goal. That will give us a total of 125 books read between June 1 and July 17, which is good for eight spins per child.

Now, its time for a confession. Everything that I just told you is a direct reflection of my super competitive personality, because my children are two and four. They don’t care about goals and milestones. They just think it’s cool that we are reading 234,890 books per day and get to spin for prizes sometimes. But I’m in it to win it, y’all.

But that is neither here nor there. Let’s talk about my grown-up books for a minute.

Flowers for Algernon
Daniel Keyes
Harcourt Brace, 1966

I’m about 15% of the way through this one and it’s so interesting and sad at the same time. I simultaneously feel hope and sorrow for Charlie and anger at his some of his ‘friends’. I’m glad we can say that the treatment of and for people with mental disabilities has improved since 1966.

I’m reading this book to fulfill the check list for my 20th Century Classics 2017 Reading List. So far I have completed six, so finishing this one will keep me on track to finish the list by the end of the year. The six I’ve already completed are The Great Gatsby, And Then There Were None, Tuck Everlasting, Holes, Animal Farm, and Pygmalion.

The Noble Servant
Melanie Dickerson
Thomas Nelson, 2017

This was my most anticipated release of the summer. I read The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest and The Beautiful Pretender back to back last December and couldn’t wait for the third book in the series to come out! Well, it’s out and I bought it and I’m almost done with it and it seems to be all I hoped for so far.

A Name Unknown
Roseanna M. White
Bethany House Publishers, 2017

This is my first book from Roseanna M. White, though I have glimpsed the covers of a few of her other books in the past. It’s next in line for me to start as soon as I finish The Noble Servant and I’m looking forward to it. It’s set right before WWI (which seems like an underrepresented time period in fiction to me) and the premise of a common thief trying to pass as an upper-class member of society intrigues me.

Those are my books in progress right now! I have a whole stack of books waiting for me when I finish these, and that makes my heart happy. But what I really want to know is what are you reading right now? What are you excited to read in the future? Drop me a comment, I adore talking books!

And thanks to Modern Mrs. Darcy for the link-up! Hop on over there to see what lots of other book lovers are reading right now too.

    • Reading is one of our favorite things but it’s easy to push aside when things get busy because it does take a little bit of time. Good luck getting back into it!

    • That’s so encouraging to hear! I feel like most people skip over the books in favor of the food, but I’ve stuck with the reviews because I love books so much! Hope you found something that appeals to you 🙂

  1. I love that you’re encouraging your children to read a ton this summer to cover up your competitive spirit, hahah! Such a good cause! I read Flowers for Algernon when I was in high school – super intriguing but definitely sad.
