NaNoWriMo 2017 – Week 1 Update

One week down, three more to go! Week one of NaNoWriMo 2017 was less than stellar. I did fit in some writing time, so I’m trying not to get discouraged, but my word count is not what it should be after seven days.

The breakdown:

Starting word count – 52,024
Day 1: 0
Day 2: 873
Day 3: 886
Day 4: 485
Day 5: 133
Day 6: 847
Day 7: 0
Total this week: 3,224

Ending word count – 55,248

What does all that mean? It means in order to meet my goal of 80,000 words by the end of the month I need to step up my game and dig myself out of the hole with about 1,075 words everyday from here on out. The bigger problem? I am experiencing some major story problems. I don’t know how to get my characters to fall in love, you guys. The last thing I want is for this story to turn into the next big cliche, so I’m searching for the perfect circumstance or event that will help hero and heroine see each other in a different way (they’re already married, by the way; this is a mail-order bride story).

If you have any suggestions for how I can accomplish that throw them at me! Also, I need you guys to do a better job shaming me this week. I am much more likely to make time to write if someone says “Hey, how’s that book coming?” because I’d rather have a root canal than admit to the person that I didn’t follow through…

I’ve never had a root canal, so I don’t technically know if that last part is true, but hopefully you get my point.

What’s a unique way for a girl to realize she cares about a dude?

  1. How is the book coming? I see nothing done on day 1 or7. I expect to see 2000 words for today. Let him have some kind of accident and she has to take care of him. While she is doing that she seems to find herself getting closer and closer. She then starts doing stuff that he really likes (his favorite foods, smells he likes, etc). I will be checking on your progress.

      • Hope you have got a lot more done. I love the ideal. Something that would cause him to need to get close to her. Touching her and smelling the beautiful fragrance. Keep digging it will come. I will be waiting on update.

  2. This sounds like a great challenge! I would LOVE to get to read your book someday. So I believe this is where I’m supposed to say something along the lines of “Get to writing!”

  3. I have friends who have done this and they’ve said the same thing about getting stuck! I took a creative writing class in college and loved it, but it was so hard to come up with new ways of saying or doing the same thing. I don’t have any suggestions, but I will say good luck! 🙂
