Books in Progress: What I’m Reading Right Now – November 2017

Today is November 15th, which means two things: 1. Thanksgiving is next week, and 2. Today we get to talk about what we’re reading right now! Both of those things kind of snuck up on me this month. I feel like I’ll be more prepared in December though, because I’ve been hard at work on my Christmas reading list, which will go live on Dec. 1, and I’ve already gotten started on my shopping (and wrote this handy guide to help you get started too!). Hopefully things will be less busy as the holidays approach (ha ha ha ha…) and I’ll be on top of the last books in progress post of the year on December 15th.

But enough wishful thinking, lets talk about books!

Reading right now:

The Austen Escape
Katherine Reay
Thomas Nelson, 2017

An engineer stripped of her pet project travels with a childhood friend to experience Jane Austen’s regency England for the ultimate escape experience. Sound fascinating? It did to me too, and so far it’s going nicely! You can expect to see a review of this one up tomorrow (Nov. 16) so you’ll get my full thoughts on this book then.

Ender’s Game
Orson Scott Card
Tor Science Fiction, 1994

This is one of the last few books I still have to complete from my 20th Century Classics Reading List. It really grabbed my attention from the get go, and I can’t wait to figure out exactly what’s going on in this very unfamiliar world. I have a terrible feeling I might end up with more questions than answers at the at end, though, because it’s the first in a very popular quartet.

Next  on the list:

Spiritfruit: The Grace of a Spirit-Filled Life
Jerry Vine
B & H Pub Group, 2001

I had a goal for this year of focusing some study time on the fruits of the spirit, and this is one of the books I selected at the beginning of the year to accomplish that goal. Much to my shame, I slacked off the last few months, but I’m trying to finish strong by completing this book and one more by the end of 2017.

Out of the Ordinary
Jen Turano
Bethany House Publishers, 2017

This sounds like such a fun story. Gertrude is a companion for a very eccentric older woman and gets into various predicaments, while a romance blooms between her and her employer’s son. Also, I think the cover is lovely and that never hurts my feelings.

Rebecca
Daphne du Maurier
Originally published by Victor Gollancz, 1938

Another book from my classics list, Rebecca seems like a perfect selection for fall/winter. From what I know about it, this dark, suspenseful thriller would be an excellent choice to curl up under a blanket and binge on to avoid going out in the cold.

Thanks to Modern Mrs. Darcy for hosting a quick lit link up! If you want to see what even more bloggers are reading, go check her out.

What are you reading right now? Do you read seasonally themed books?

  1. The Austen Escape kind of reminds me of that book/movie Austenland. I’d still love to read it because I love anything Jane Austen! I’ve been meaning to read Ender’s Game for a while now too. And I love Rebecca!

  2. I love your list! I have only read one on there, Ender’s game. Will have to add the others. I am currently reading Lilli De Jong by Janet Benton and I am loving it. It is a hard read at places, but so much history of women I hadn’t thought about before.

  3. I enjoy Jen Turano’s books. She has a fun humor that is great when I need to destress. The Austen Escape I will have to check out since I have enjoyed her other books.

    • I’m listening to her podcast as I type this! I agree, I don’t always like the books she recommends, but I’ve also found some great ones from listening to her discussions.
