Preheat oven to 375ยบ. Cream butter, sugars, and vanilla until fluffy and smooth, about 2 minutes. Beat in eggs. Beat in salt and baking soda, then add in the flour 1/2 cup at a time, beating well between each addition. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts (if desired).
Drop onto an ungreased cookie sheet in scant 1/4 cup piles and bake for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown around the edges. Cool on cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes, then remove to cooling rack or plate. Store in an airtight container.
I like to use salted butter for this recipe because I like the extra flavor, but if you don't like a lot of salt go with unsalted. I also omit the nuts because my family doesn't like them.
