Books in Progress: June 2017 – Vacation Edition!

Everything is better when you can relate it to vacation, can I get an amen? Next week the fam and I are going to be cruising it up, so I decided to make the Books In Progress post this month be all about what I am planning to read on vacation! I selected several paperbacks and one ebook to keep me entertained on the long drive to and from our departure point, and hopefully to enjoy on a lounge chair on the deck of our ship, with a breeze blowing, a cool drink, peaceful silence…but I digress.

You will, perhaps, note the absence of my typical nonfiction selection. The reason for that is basically that I read too many nonfiction books in a row and my accidental fiction fast has left me craving other times and places in a way that will not be satisfied by real life accounts. So it’s fiction all the way for at least the next week!

See what I was reading in May.

Thanks to Modern Mrs. Darcy for the link-up, check out her page to see what she and other bloggers are reading right now as well!  And you can click on any of the images in this post to read a more detailed description or to see buying options for any of these books. Thanks for reading!

The Painter’s Daughter
Julie Klassen
Bethany House Publishers, 2015

Super excited about this one! I bought this one like two months ago and I have been holding onto it specifically to pack for this trip because it’s one I am absolutely certain I will love. It’s the last of Julie Klassen’s novels left for me to read until the newest one comes out in December (the sequel to this book)  so I’m going to try to savor it.

The Help

Kathryn Stockett
Penguin Group, 2009

File this one under ‘better late than never’, I suppose? I know I missed the boat (cruise pun intended) on this one, but a friend recently put it in my hands and told me not to delay any longer. And not to judge a book by it’s cover, but it’s such a sunny yellow color I can’t help but think it will make a great beach read.

Heart on the Line
Karen Witemeyer
Bethany House Publishers, 2017

I’m counting this one even though it’s not actually in my possession because it’s in the mail and I’m hoping (fingers crossed on both hands!) that it will show up in my mailbox today so that it can come with me too! I love me some Karen Witemeyer…if you’ve never read her books check. them. out. immediately.

Animal Farm
George Orwell
Secker and Warburg, 1945

This might seem like a strange choice for a beach read, but I’m behind on the list of classics I want to read in 2017 and this one was available to be borrowed from the library so I got it. I do want to read it but it’s probably last in line on this particular list for this particular occasion.

That’s my vacation list! What are you reading right now? What are your favorite beach reads?

    • My husband read it in middle or high school and loved it, but I’ve never read it. Hopefully it lives up to its classic status!

    • I try to keep my reading list varied so I don’t get bored! Plus I genuinely enjoy reading a lot of different genres, though historical fiction is my all time go-to favorite.

  1. I really need to read Animal Farm! I’ve been trying to mix in a classic every month or so, but sometimes it’s hard to get excited about them. I think Middlemarch is next on my list.

  2. Oh gosh, I LOVED The Help! I had seen the movie before but the book has so much more detail! I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Olivia Spence (Minnie in the movie) as well as a few other actors and it was phenomenal!
