Blue Cheese Avocado Burger

Can we just talk about burgers for a second? Burgers are in my top ten for all-American comfort foods (which also includes mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and fries, in case you were wondering). I mean I really love a good hamburger, and I like all kinds of different toppings on them.

There are three burgers that really stand out in my memory from the last few years. First, the make-it-yourself burger I had on our cruise in June, which I topped with tomato, lettuce, sautĂ©ed onions and mushrooms, and chipotle mayo. It was like heaven in my mouth, but I do have to add the disclaimer that it was the first real food I’d had in like 24 hours after a nasty bout of sea-sickness, so it might have just been the gratitude talking.

The second notable burger is the Thunder Road burger I had at the Smokey Mountain Brewery in Gatlinburg, TN on our 7th anniversary. The power went out so they couldn’t take a card, and we barely had enough cash on us to pay our bill – but that’s another story for another day. The important part is that the burger was fantastic! And if you are ever there you should also get the soft pretzels with beer cheese. Also fantastic.

The third burger I think about often is the one I make at home – the Blue Cheese Avocado Burger. I absolutely cannot get enough of the blue cheese flavor and the creaminess of the avocado on top of a lightly seasoned cheeseburger patty.

It’s also great with bacon on it, but I usually skip that step because I’m too lazy to spend the extra time frying bacon when this burger already tastes amazing as it is. Give it a try and see for yourself!

What are your favorite burger toppings?

Blue Cheese Avocado Burger
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Serves 1

1/4 lb ground beef, formed into a hamburger patty
Salt, pepper, garlic powder
1 slice cheddar cheese
1 whole wheat burger bun
2 tbsp chunky blue cheese dressing
Baby spinach
1 roma tomato, sliced
1/2 avocado, sliced

Season your burger patty with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste, and cook according to your preference. This part can be done on a grill, on a griddle, or in a skillet – whatever you have available. While the meat cooks, lightly toast the bun by baking it at 400Âş for about 4 minutes. Remove the bun and spread 1 tbsp of blue cheese on each side. Layer baby spinach on the bottom half, followed by tomato. When the meat is done, lay the cheddar on top and let the patty continue to cook for about a minute to melt the cheese. Place the hamburger/cheese on top of the tomato and layer on the avocado slices and the top half of the bun. Enjoy immediately with chips or fries (these fries are my favorite).

  1. This looks incredible! All my favorite things in one burger! I’ve always loved blue cheese in my burger my I have never paired it with avocado. Next time, for sure!

  2. OMG, this Avocado Burger is insane. I would love adding avocado to my burgers, and with blue cheese? Must be soo good. Once in a while, if I feel clueless of what to make for a crowd, it’s normally either tacos or burgers.
