There are few foods that are more universally admired than the illustrious pizza. It is one of those meals that is truly enjoyed by the whole family, and there aren’t many of those, at least at my house.
You guys probably think that a food blogger would have a family full of adventurous eaters who clean their plates with relish at every meal. Not so, my friends. Hardly a meal goes by that doesn’t include at least one picky-pants family member requesting some kind of substitution or modification to their meal. We hardly ever all four eat the exact same thing, but when we have pizza? Everybody is all in.

But every now and then one can grow bored with plain cheese pizza, no matter how tasty and convenient it is. On one such occasion I took it upon myself to invent a recipe that could be made quickly and easily with common kitchen staples that tasted amazing. Ambitious, right? Maybe so, but I think I’ve done it.
The key is the crust. I love a good homemade pizza crust as much as the next person, but golly bum do they take FOR-EV-ER to make. If I’ve got the time I like to make this crust, but when I’m in a hurry (which is 98.36% of the time) I use Mama Mary’s packaged pizza crusts.
Just so you know, Mama Mary’s isn’t even paying me to promote their product. I just love how convenient it is, and they even have Gluten-Free options, if that’s important to you.
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 pizza crust
- 1 small ripe tomato, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella
- 2 tbsp shredded parmesan
-
Preheat oven to 450. In a small sauce pan melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour, then whisk in milk a little at a time to prevent clumping. Whisk in garlic powder and salt and continue stirring until thickened, about 4 or 5 minutes. Remove one Mama Mary's pizza crust from the package and spread the white sauce evenly on top. Thinly slice the tomato and roughly chop the spinach, then arrange evenly over the sauce. Top with mozzarella, followed by parmesan. Bake for 9-10 minutes, until edges are lightly brown and cheese is melted and bubbly. Cool for 2-3 minutes before slicing.
This looks delicious! Trader joe’s has whole wheat pizza dough in their refrigerated section that we love to use. It makes me feel like I’m making my own pizza dough without all the work!
‘Without all the work’ is the key phrase! I love homemade pizza but making it all the way from scratch takes hours.
That looks delicious! I use a gluten-free pre-made crust all the time! This would be a great appetizer too.
It would! They make smaller sized premade crusts that would be perfect for that.
I’ve always loved white sauce pizza but never found a recipe I really liked. Definitely giving yours a try on my next meal plan!

This looks delicious! I have a little boy who acts like his world had ended if tomato sauce comes near his plate, so a white sauce pizza is a great option!
This might be just what he needs! 🙂
I LOVE pizza! I love it even more when the crust is pre-made, so I just have to top it and bake it! This sounds like something that needs to go into my pantry!
It’s so good, I hope you get to try it!
That looks so delicious! I love a good tomato-based pizza sauce (because I love tomatoes), but lately I realize how much I love white sauce with tomatoes. This looks divine.
Thanks! I love a classic pizza too, but it’s nice to mix it up sometimes.
Love this! Thanks for sharing at Friday Frenzy Link Party! PINNED!
Thanks!
