After much deliberation over the past few days (which you might have seen a glimpse of if you follow me on Instagram), I have made my selection for the next prompt for the 2018 Reading Challenge.
This month’s prompt is: A book set in a place you want to visit.
What place would I like to visit? The heather hills and majestic castles of Scotland! I have a thing for Highlander stories anyway, so it was a natural choice for this month. After some research and recommendations from other book lovers, I narrowed it down to three: Consuming Fire by Kathleen Morgan, Here Burns My Candle by Liz Curtis Higgs, and Thorn In My Heart, also by Liz Curtis Higgs.
I ultimately decided on Thorn In My Heart by Liz Curtis Higgs.
I’m currently about seven chapters in and it seems like a good choice so far. What I didn’t realize when I chose it is that the story is a modern parallel of the story of Esau and Jacob, and Leah and Rachel. When I say modern I don’t mean present day, I just mean more modern than bible times; the main part of the story is set in 1788. Still, the parallel is unmistakable, with twin brothers named Evan and Jamie vying for a birthright, and two sisters named Leana and Rose, vying for one brother.
And just to follow up on last month, my January choice was a good one. I enjoyed each and every story in the Most Eligible Bachelor collection I chose by cover at the bookstore.
Would you know it? I want to visit Scotland too. This seems like a great book. It’s awesome you are doing this challenge.
Thanks! I love reading so I thought it would be fun 🙂
I daydream of visiting Scotland! This sounds like a great read! I will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for reading!
Oh I definitely need to put this one on the reading list. Scotland is such a wonderful setting (hello, Outlander) and the time period is fascinating.
It’s pretty good so far!
Too funny! I picked a light mystery that takes place in Scotland!
Cool! What’s the title?
I didn’t know Liz Curtis Higgs wrote novels. I’ve done 2 of her “Bad Girls Of The Bible” studies – and really enjoyed em.
From what I understand she is quite prolific, with a variety of fiction and non-fiction. I’d like to try one of the Bad Girls of the Bible studies, I’ve heard good things!
Great reading challenge! I re-read Simon Sinek’s books to start off the new year!
It must be pretty good if you’ve read it more than once!
