Variety is the name of the game this month! I didn’t realize until I started listing them out how wildly different from each other all of my recent choices are. Historical fiction, contemporary/historical fiction, middle grade fiction, nonfiction, and a good combination of ebook, audiobook, and hard copy books.
I like having a few different things going at one time. That way I always have something that suits my current mood and circumstance. Waiting in the school pick up line? Audiobook for hands free reading. Reading to relax before bed? Hard copy, probably fiction. Got an extra few minutes while you wait for your kid to be done with dance or soccer? Ebook on my phone, since I always have it handy. Options are a good thing when it comes to books and reading!
Do you have a favorite format? How do you sneak in extra reading time?Â

Just Finished:
I just finished the hard copy version of this one a couple of days ago and you can expect a review soon because I was enchanted. It follows two separate but entwined love stories, one in the present and one in the past. They are linked by an unsent love letter that is now the inspiration for a movie script. It’s delightful and I can’t wait to tell you more about it! Also the cover is so, so pretty.
Books in Progress:
My best friend chose this book for our little two person ‘Bestie Book Club’. I barely know how to describe it, except to say that it examines the science behind intuition and subconscious reactions. It’s absolutely fascinating! Good choice, bestie. This is my current ebook, the one that travels everywhere with me.
Ms. Mulligan and the Enchanted Ice Cream
This one is a middle grade novel I chose for the reading challenge this month. It’s pretty cute so far! It’s about a 12 year old girl who wakes up at a sleepover in a 25 year old body. You can imagine the shock and mayhem that ensues between her and her friends. I’m planning a review for the first week of September, so stay tuned for that.
The only audiobook on this list, The Dip is a joint-venture with my husband. We’re listening to it together before bed and it is full of wisdom about why quitting isn’t always a bad thing, how you know when you should quit, and more importantly, when you shouldn’t quit. This book clocks in at only about an hour and half, so it’s a pretty quick listen but full of insight.
We’re probably all at least marginally familiar with the Little House books. I read them two or three times as a kid and now I’m reading them with my girls. This one is the third book, and it has always been my favorite. I can’t adequately express my pleasure that the girls seem to be enjoying this series as much as I did and it’s so fun to revisit an old favorite.
Up Next:
This book has been all over a lot of the readerly groups/blogs/social media I follow and nobody has a bad word to say about it. It’s been an astonishingly long time since I’ve read a book in my favorite genre (historical fiction), so I am chomping at the bit to dig into this one. Go read the description and I bet you’ll want to read it too.
Thanks to Modern Mrs. Darcy for hosting a quick lit link up! If you want to see what even more bloggers are reading right now, go check her out.Â
What are you reading right now?
Jordan … thanks for some new-to-me reads! I love a book in my hands – paperback or hardcover. No thanks to Kindle … but yes, a fabulous audio book on a too long car trip is a brilliant move.
I usually prefer hard copies too, but it just depends on the situation. I’d much rather read an ebook than no book at all!
Ooo – The Dip and Blink both sound interesting! Adding to my list. Thanks!
You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy them as much as I am.
I’ve been reading Farmer Boy with my daughter, too! We’ve put it to the side for the moment since she got the next Harry Potter for her birthday and couldn’t wait, but I’m so glad she loves Little House. One thing I’ve noticed that I never did as a kid is how much FOOD is described in this book. I read somewhere that Laura really focuses on the disparity between her and Almanzo’s childhoods (his family was pretty prosperous) and now it’s all I see 🙂
I know, I remember being awed and a little jealous as a child that his parents just let him run out of the house with a donut in each hand and cookies in his pockets! What I didn’t catch on to until this time around is the disparity you mentioned. The Wilders really were pretty wealthy by the standards of the time but I didn’t recognize that as a kid.
What a fantastic list of books! It’s sad to say I am reading a cookbook right now, and after reading your excerpts I need to branch out!
There’s nothing wrong with reading cookbooks!
Mrs Mulligan and the Enchanted Ice Cream sounds like a book my daughter and I would enjoy reading together!
I could definitely be a good one to read together – there would be lots for you two to discuss!
A 12 year old waking up in a 25 year olds body would be very shocking. It reminds me of 13 going on 30 which is such a great movie.
Shocking is the right word for it ha ha
I haven’t heard of any of these before. I am so behind on reading, I would love to check out some of these and do some reading on one of our trips.
Reading is what trips are for 🙂 Hope you find a good one!
I haven’t read a good book in so long.
Here’s hoping you find a good one soon and get out of that reading slump 🙂
I love this kind of posts, especially when people try and have some variety of what they’re reading. I’ve reached for more self-help books this year than ever before. I’ve definitely put some of these on my list for future TBR lists!
Self-help books can suck me in too! Thanks for reading!
