Stretched Too Thin: How Working Moms Can Lose the Guilt, Work Smarter, and Thrive
Jessica N. Turner
Revell, 2018

Do you ever feel like you are being pulled in a million different directions? So often that’s the story of a woman’s life, but even more so for moms and most especially for working moms. It’s easy to get bogged down with all the things we should be doing at work, in our homes, for ourselves, and for our relationships. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and Stretched Too Thin can help.

In her latest book, Stretched Too Thin, Jessica N. Turner candidly addresses many of the stumbling blocks to happiness or fulfillment that working moms can face. She offers gentle encouragement, as well as practical tips for how to overcome some of the mindsets or situations that stand in the way of doing your best work in all areas of your life. The research she did for this book is extensive, interviewing thousands of working moms to find out what their most pressing problems are and talking to experts who can help guide us through common issues. You’ll find quotes from these moms and experts sprinkled throughout the book, giving the content a real-life feel that lends her words credence.

My favorite part is that at the end of every chapter she includes a couple pages of reflection questions  to help you work through the different parts of your life and pinpoint what is causing you the biggest angst. Is it parenting? There’s a chapter for that. Your marriage? Your job? Self-care? Housework? Jessica covers it all, with personal stories to illustrate each area.

I would hand every working mom I know a copy of Stretched Too Thin if I could. Whether you work in an office job or from home, this book can help you identify your priorities and find balance. And if you would like to hear Jessica talk about this book before you decide if you want to read it, check out this interview on one of my favorite podcasts, Sorta Awesome. I listened to this episode after I had ordered the book but before I received it, and I was definitely more excited to read it after hearing her talk about it. Also, I know you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but as I mentioned in my last post, this cover is really pretty and that never hurts my feelings.

  1. I feel exactly the same way about this book. I just got my hands on a copy, and even though I’ve only finished a few chapters, I am telling every mom I know about it. Totally love the cover too! It brightens up my bedside table and makes me feel cheery every time I pick it up 🙂 I’ll have to check out that episode of Sorta Awesome. I heard Jessica interviewed on Tsh Oxenreider’s podcast and thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

    • I listen to Tsh’s podcast here and there but not regularly like I do Sorta Awesome. I’ll have to see if I can hunt down the one with Jessica’s interview. Thanks for the tip and I’m glad you liked it as well!

  2. Oh wow, this looks like a book I need to read as a working mom! What a lovely review, I will definitely pick up a copy.
