Book Review: The Heart of a Hero

Who is on your auto-buy list? You know, the authors whose new books immediately go to the top of your TBR even before you’ve read the description. Susan May Warren is one of those authors for me.

I love how she writes disasters for her characters. She has several series that center around first responders, search and rescue teams, military men and women, pro-athletes, bodyguards, etc. With job like those you better believe they constantly find themselves in dangerous situations where the adrenaline is high. Throw in a healthy dose of romance and inner angst and you’ve got yourself a good story.

In The Heart of a Hero former SEAL Jake drives right into the heart of a Category 5 hurricane to search for Aria, the girl he just can’t stop thinking about. He finds her holed up in an abandoned hospital using all her skills as a surgeon to help the handful of people trapped with her. There are plenty of high stakes situations that they must navigate through, while also coming to terms with their growing attraction to each other.

The only thing I wasn’t crazy about in The Heart of a Hero was the volume of coincidences. At a certain point I had a hard time making the leap from serendipity to a high number of improbable connections between characters and events. But that wasn’t a big enough issue to undermine my overall enjoyment of the book.

By and large it was the fast-paced, entertaining read that I was expecting and I definitely recommend it, along with the first book in the series. I’m also looking forward to the third book, coming out in October.
