It’s been a month since my last books in progress post, but it seems like a lifetime. We are deep in the weeds of virtual schooling around here and also trying to keep going with regular life stuff like working from home, getting people to doctor appointments, and making sure everyone gets three square meals a day.
Does that make you feel tired? Me too. Luckily I’ve had plenty of good books lying around that have prompted me to make time for rest and reading.
There are fewer books then usual on my list today because a large portion of my reading time has been going towards holiday reading in preparation for the Christmas book list I share every November, and I’m leaving those titles out for now so as not to spoil anything later on. But I still have several non-holiday books that I’m excited about, so keep scrolling!

Just Finished:
I love the way Tim Ferriss thinks about things differently and isn’t afraid to challenge commonly held beliefs. While I don’t agree with everything he writes in this book, I do this he is mostly on the right track, so I’m currently about 11/2 weeks into a modified version of his slow-carb diet and hoping to start seeing some results soon. You should know that this is a long book – almost 600 pages – but he says right at the beginning to skip to the sections that apply to your individual goals, so don’t let the length hold you back from reading it.
If you want to read something unlike anything you’ve ever read before, pick up Stranger in the Woods today. Despite its thriller-y sounding title, it’s actually about a hermit who lived alone in rural Maine for almost 3 decades. It was fascinating! Here’s the blurb:
Many people dream of escaping modern life, but most will never act on it. This is the remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his own.
I stand by the description I gave of this book on Instagram: it’s like a very dark version of the Boxcar Children. These four kids run away from an abusive situation at an orphanage and embark on a journey to try to find a long lost relative, but their path is anything but easy. They come across many interesting characters, some dangerous, most helpful. I continued to be surprised at each twist and turn of their story, and while the subject matter isn’t light, there was still hope to be found in the end.
In Progress:
The final book in the Arc of a Scythe trilogy, the intrigue continues. Scythe Curie’s plan to preserve Citra and Rowan was successful, but there are many impediments in the way of their being able to usurp Overblade Goddard and end his reign of terror. I’m about 25% of the way in, and think this will prove to be a great ending to the series. The things I enjoyed about both of the other two books – the dystopian atmosphere, ethical conundrums, and the commentary on technology – are still present and I can’t wait to see how this story wraps up.
Up Next:
I’ve actually never read a book by Rachelle Dekker before, although I have read several by her father, Ted Dekker. This is marketed as an action-packed Christian suspense novel, and based on the description and what I know about Ted’s writing style (I think they’ve co-authored a few books together), I suspect it will be a little twisty and mind-bending as well. Excited to dive in once I finish The Toll!
This book sounds like it will check all my boxes. Historical fiction, an arranged marriage, a natural disaster, and three converging stories? Sign me up, I’m here for it. And a friendly PSA – as the time I’m writing this, the Kindle version of The Last Train to Key West is only $1.99!
What have you been reading lately? I’m always up for adding a title or ten to my TBR so drop your current reads in the comments for all the rest of us to see!
Want more book talk? Anne Bogel over at Modern Mrs. Darcy has a great current reads list for her linkup this month.
Stranger in the Woods seems like my kind of book! I’d love to learn more about that lifestyle and seeing how his mentality shifted or not!
I’m currently reading Recipe for Respect! It’s a tough read (very dry), but I’m bound and determined to finish it.
The Last Train to Key West sounds amazing, I need to take advantage of the sale
Love the variety of these books!!! Little bit of everything
Sounds like a great round up! I haven’t had a chance to read a whole lot, but making a list of books to read!
