Books in Progress: What I’ve Been Reading Lately – November 2020

This year is very nearly over (I can hear you all cheering from here) and I have to say, its been a pretty good reading year for me despite anything else you might have to say about 2020.

I did lose a little reading time over the last couple of weeks because my oldest kid just can’t stay out of trouble, and by that I mean an emergency room visit for a stitch from a weird accident and two other doctor visits for an unrelated infection. Getting up in the middle of the night with her made me cut out some of my typical early morning reading time, but now that she’s feeling better I’m making up for lost time, and I have some great books to share today.

Before we get into the list, I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss my 2020 Christmas Reading Guide. Holiday books have dominated my reading the last month or two, but I haven’t really been sharing about them in order to not give away too many spoilers before the guide came out. Now you can see what I’ve been reading to get in the holiday mood!

Just Finished:

Mending Places

If you follow me on Instagram there is no way that you are not aware of my recent Denise Hunter obsession. I absolutely love her sweet love stories, and this one didn’t disappoint. I highly recommend it, though you should be aware that trigger warnings abound for anyone who has experienced child abuse or sexual abuse.

Don’t Overthink It

The title of this book basically needs to be my life motto. It’s so easy to overthink things in almost every area of your life but Anne Bogel’s book gives practical tips for how to get out of that cycle and keep your brain from forming the bad thinking habits that make you miserable.

In Progress:

Rugged and Relentless

Are you a re-reader? Mostly I’m not, but I was browsing my local library this week and spotted this one that I remember loving this one a long time ago, so I grabbed it on a whim. I’m only a few pages in but so far it’s funny, like I remembered, and the hero is swoon worthy, like I remembered.

The Vanishing Half

I’m pretty sure everyone in America has at least heard of this book. After being bombarded for months now on social media and bookish podcasts, I decided to give it a try even though it didn’t sound like a book I would usually reach for. I’m still undecided about how much I like it. It’s pretty readable and I do want to find out what happened to the other twin, but so far I think my initial impression that it didn’t call to me might be right. It’s a #spicytake I know. Maybe I’ll change my mind by the time I finish it.

French Women Don’t Get Fat

When I read the title of this book I could’t not see what was inside. French cuisine is known for being luscious, so why don’t the French has the same obesity problems that other developed countries face? It turns out there are a few reasons, and I’ve enjoyed learning about the cultural differences that impact our diets and weight. The overall philosophy behind it reminds me a lot of the book Intuitive Eating, which was a game changer for me when I read it a couple of years ago.

Up Next:

Her Secret Song

This is the third in a series by one of my favorite authors, and I can’t wait to dig into it. The series is about three sisters who grew up isolated from the world in a mountain valley. In the previous books, two of this sisters found love and overcame their fears, and now it’s the third and final sister’s turn.

Driftwood Lane

What? Another Denise Hunter book? I know, you’re all shocked. But this is about a woman who becomes responsible for her father’s three young children when he passes away suddenly. There is a handsome handy man who offers to help her, and I’m sure you can take it from there. Can’t wait!

The Princess Spy

I found this one hanging out in the YA section of the library, and since it’s been a while since I read a Melanie Dickerson novel I decided to give it go. Also my 7 year old said if it has a princess and a spy I should like it, so there’s that.
