Books in Progress: What I’ve Been Reading Lately – July 2025

This month’s list is going to be short and sweet because—and no one is more shocked about this than me—I haven’t finished a book in over two weeks! Last month (June 2025) I read eighteen books. At the rate I’m going this month, I’ll be lucky to finish a third of that.

But the reason is a fun one—I just returned from a two week road trip that was so jam-packed with cool stuff that I just didn’t have the time to read more than a handful of pages per day. So since I only have a few books to share today, I’m going to make it up to you with some pretty awesome vacation photos before we get into the list.

Let’s get to it!

Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park (a.k.a. the longest, hardest 8 mile hike I could have imagined)
Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park
Bison in Lamar Valley (Yellowstone). We cut our hike short on this one when the path was blocked by a ton of bison in no hurry to move on. We did get to see a pack of seven wolves before we turned back though!
Mt. Rushmore! (And can someone please explain why my children are so tall now??)
Badlands National Park just before a hail storm moved in. We barely made it to our car before it came down!

In Progress:

Tempest at Annabel’s Lighthouse

Jaime Jo Wright never fails to draw me in with her books and this one is no exception. This dual timeline story about two young women connected across time by a lighthouse and the ghost who haunts it is the perfect balance of eery, mysterious, and poignant. I’m so annoyed that life has kept me from reading this one straight through in one sitting!

A Game of Hearts

I’m not quite done, but I’m going to go ahead and call this one of the best enemies to more romances I’ve ever read. The banter and chemistry between these two competing archers is exquisite! There is lots of Regency drama as Marigold pushes the boundaries of what ladies are supposed to do and Tristan is hard-pressed to be a gentleman when he’d prefer to avoid her except during archery competitions.

Up Next:

Forget Me Knot

How pretty is this cover? I read the description and was totally hooked when I saw the MFC owns a pretzel bakery called ‘Knotty & Nice’. I love books with food in them! I’ve also never read a book where the MMC owned a flower shop, so that’s something different to look forward to. I’ve been seeing good things from other readers on Instagram, so I’m excited to give it a try.

A Fire Endless

The audiobook is the only way to go for this duology so that you can hear and enjoy the fabulous Scottish accent of the narrator. I listened to the first book, A River Enchanted, and was enthralled by the magical Scottish folklore and all the complicated relationships and intrigue between people and clans. It was a practically perfect romantic fantasy in my opinion, and I hope the second one finishes up the story and meets all the expectations the first one set! How will Jack and Adaira manage to bring peace between two warring clans in spite of the island spirits and mysterious sickness working against them? I don’t know, but I’m excited find out!

  1. We did a similar vacation several years ago from Iowa to Wyoming and back with stops in the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Laramie. Good memories! We leave this next week for our vacation to a house on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. Ready for some relaxation and family time!
