Books in Progress: What I’m Reading Right Now – July 2018

So far July is turning out to be an ambitious reading month for me, which is strange because I’ve been (and plan to continue being) very busy this month. But somehow my books in progress list has gotten totally out of control. This is how it happened:

I started out July with a book to finish from last month, along with a book that I was scheduled to review on the 12th, and my typical reading challenge title. I knew going in that I had one more book scheduled for review at the end of the month but what I wasn’t expecting was for a book I had on hold from the library to come up, to receive an unexpected title for review, and to be made aware of a book club discussion at the library for a book that I have been wanting to read for a long time.

Goodness gracious, me oh my, sweet potato pie.

So now my goal is to finish all those books, about seven in total, before the end of the month. It’s a slightly daunting task, but I think it will be adequately rewarding. Side note: my husband and I picked a terrible time to start watching a new tv show on Netflix. Every night I have to make the choice to watch another episode with him or pick up a book for an hour. Each prospect is equally appealing. #firstworldproblems

Just Finished:

Honeysuckle Dreams

This is the book that I knew I would be reviewing at the beginning of the month and I was very excited about it. It is a modern day marriage of convenience story that totally lived up to my hopes for it. You can read my full review for it here.

In Progress:

The Handmaid’s Tale

My reading challenge choice for this month, so far my thought are that it is strange but intriguing. I want to know how these people got where they are and I have this constant feeling that something terrible is just around the corner while I’m reading it. I just hope it’s nothing too gruesome…

The House at Saltwater Point

Speaking of gruesome, I’m only one chapter in but there is already a puddle of blood with the victim missing. Now, if this book is anything like The View from Rainshadow Bay, there won’t be anything more disturbing than that, which is something I really liked about it. I love a good mystery but I don’t want to have nightmares about it, which is something that Colleen Coble seems to do really well.

A Matter of Trust

Remember me talking about the Montana Rescue series last month and how I couldn’t stop reading them? Well, the saga continues this month, both literally and figuratively. I just couldn’t say no to book number three when it was my turn on the holds list. If I don’t read it now I’ll have to go to the back of the line and I simply can’t allow that to happen. Can’t do it. There was a snowy mountain rescue in the first ten pages and I need that kind of adventure in my life.

Shift Your Thinking for Success: 77 Ways to Win at Work and in Life

I’m a sucker for self-improvement books and this looks like a really good one. Maybe I need to bump it up and see if any of these 77 tips will help me win at reading all these books this month…A bonus with this one is that it seems like one my husband will like as well, and that actually doesn’t happen all that often. We have pretty different reading tastes and habits.

All The Light We Cannot See

This is the one that is being discussed by fellow library members that I have wanted to read for a long, long time. I’ve heard so many great things about it so I’m kind of grateful for the impetus to pick it up at last, even if the timing is a little inconvenient. The only problem is that all the copies were checked out so I’m counting on one of the people that has it right now to turn it in on time so I can read it before the 28th. Fingers crossed.

And thanks to Anne Bogel for hosting a quick lit link up today! If you want to see what even more bloggers are reading right now, go check out her blog Modern Mrs. Darcy.

What are you reading right now? Do you ever bite off more than you can chew in your reading life?

  1. The Handmaid’s Tale is also on my list of books I want to read. I’m hearing so many things about it, time to have my own opinion. And that self-improvement book. I’ve just started falling down the rabbit hole of those 🙂

  2. I haven’t been able to pick up The Handmaid’s Tale yet. Some tell me not to read it and others say I must. I’m thinking it will be a winter read that I’ll try and if I can’t manage it, I’ll quit. I also need to read All the Light We Cannot See. I really love Doerr’s writing so not sure why I haven’t read it yet.

    • I’m about halfway through and I’m still not sure what I really think about The Handmaid’s Tale, lol. l am really looking forward to All the Light We Cannot See, I’ve heard soooo many wonderful reviews!

    • Yep, it is! It’s a classic so I’m sure your local library would have a copy if you want to see what all he fuss is about 🙂

  3. We’re currently listening to all the Harry Potter audiobooks and they are incredible! I had only watched the movies, so these are a million times better 🙂

    • Can you believe I’ve never partaken in Harry Potter in any format? People think I’m crazy 😉 Glad you are enjoying the audiobooks!

  4. We just posted about Until Tomorrow, Mr. Marsworth because it was SO AMAZING. You should check it out! Also, if you love the Handmaid’s Tale, I would definitely recommend Red Clocks by Leni Zumas. It’s WILD.

  5. I hardly ever give books five stars, but you’re reading two of my five-star picks right now (The Handmaid’s Tale and All the Light We Cannot See), so I hope you love them! Although I’ll give you fair warning: the ending of The Handmaid’s Tale is a serious love/hate thing—I thought it was brilliant, but a lot of readers really despise it (and I can see why).

Good luck with all your reading goals for this month! Sounds like they’ll keep you busy!

  6. Oh my gosh, you are so lucky to have All the Light to look forward to! I thought I was one of the last bloggers who hadn’t read it when I read it last year. It is stunning, one of those books I did not want to end.

I, too, was surprised at how much July reading I have. It used to be a quiet month for new releases but this year I had a crazy number of ARCs. I had hoped to get to backlist reading but I’m still trying to get through new releases- even with 2 DNFs in a row. I think I fell prey to my eyes being bigger than my…brain? Reading abilities? Not sure what the correct analogy is, but you know what I mean!

    • Whatever the appropriate analogy, I totally understand what you mean! The ARCs have been rolling in like crazy and I told my husband to hold me accountable to my commitment to not accept any more until September. That’s a fabulous problem to have though, right?

  7. These are awesome picks! I am just about to finish “Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah, and I HIGHLY recommend it. She is an amazing writer and this story is incredible. The best yet!
