Oh boy, am I ever excited! Several months ago I started dreaming about putting together a reading challenge for 2018, but I wasn’t sure if there would be any interest in such a thing. I didn’t want to waste my time (or injure my pride, let’s just be honest) by putting it out there and achieving no participation. So a few weeks ago I put out some feelers on social media and got an overall positive response from my friends and followers. With that encouragement I decided to take the plunge and create the first ever Read. Eat. Repeat. Reading Challenge!
If you are still reading at this point I’ll assume you are at least mildly interested, so here are the facts and details about this challenge.
What it is:
- A list of open-ended prompts to help you choose one book per month in 2018. That means 12 books over the course of the year.
- An opportunity to discuss and compare your book choices with other readers – and hopefully make a bookish friend or two.
What it isn’t:
- A huge commitment. You don’t have to sign up for anything or commit to reading a book every month, unless you just want to. If you don’t like a prompt, skip it! Jump back in next month, or whenever you feel like it.
- A competition. Don’t feel like you have to be a professional reader or identify as a first-class bookworm to participate. No matter what anyone else is reading, just choose the prompts and books that sound fun to YOU. No pressure, man.
Still with me? Great! Below is the list of prompts for the Read. Eat. Repeat. 2018 Reading Challenge:
- A book you chose for the cover
- A book set in a place you want to visit
- A nonfiction book with an interesting topic
- A book that intimidates you
- A memoir or biography
- A book you’ve read (and loved) before
- A dystopian novel
- A middle grade or Young Adult book
- A book with your favorite color in the title
- An eighteenth century classic
- A book set in the future
- A book you’ve been meaning to read
I am going to be sharing a brief post on the 1st of each month with my choice for that month’s prompt starting January 1st. I hope you’ll join the discussion in the comments or anywhere on social media using the hashtag #readrepeat2018. If you want a physical copy of the reading challenge to put on your refrigerator or in your journal, feel free to save and print the image above, or email me for a PDF copy.
I love the idea of a reading challenge! Picking a book by its cover is fun!
Me too! Can’t wait to hear what you pick!
What a great idea! I really need to start reading more and this could be a great motivation!
Awesome! Hope to see you around as we discuss our picks in the next few months!
What a fun idea. I love your hashtag idea.
Thanks! Hopefully people (including me lol) will remember to use it so we can all see what everyone else it reading 🙂
I’m in! This looks like a great challenge. I like the 18th century classic.
I know, I can’t wait to see what people pick for that one! Welcome aboard!
This is such a fun challenge! I use to be an avid reader but these days find it a little harder to sit down with a good book while I have two toddlers to tend to.
I feel you! One of the reasons I liked nursing was because I got a lot of reading time in when I would sit down for a feed. Then they got big and now it’s harder to carve out time!
I love this idea!! I’m already on my way for the novel that intimidates me. Just started War and Peace a couple of months ago. It’s slow going but I’m loving it!
Ooh baby, that’s a good one! I am thinking maybe Les Miserables for that one? Haven’t decided yet 🙂
Oh, I need to read Les Mis too! Great choice. For my favorite color it will definitely be The Color Purple.
Purple is my favorite color too!
What a fun challenge! I love to read, so I’m definitey up for this. I’m excited to see what books you pick too!
Yay! Can’t wait to see what you choose too! I love talking about what people are reading.
I love this idea. I’ve been wanting to get back into reading books regularly, so this will be good motivation!
Great! Hope you get to join in where you can!
This is a brilliant idea!! I have been wanting to do something like this for years!! I am saving this post!! Thanks for this awesome idea!!
You’re so welcome! I’m so glad you’re going to be joining in!
What a fun challenge! I might have to pop in on a couple months! #wanderingwednesday
I hope you do! It’s going to be fun!
I love this idea! I love the idea that each person picks their own books, and I love the prompts. I’ve definitely picked a book or two just for the covers (and been a bit surprised.)
Thanks! I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone chooses.
I love to read. This is a really good idea. I always get stuck on how to choose a new book. I love the ideas you gave. Especially picking a book set in a place I want to visit!
That’s going to be a hard one for me, there’s so many places I want to visit!
How fun! I think these type of prompts are great because people have more leeway in what they choose.

Yes! I want people to be able to pick books that appeal to them, and everyone’s reading taste is different.
This is perfect!! I love to read, but even someone who doesn’t can easily do a book a month.
That’s what I’m hoping! One per month seems like a manageable amount to me.
Love this! Simple to follow and low stress. Happy reading!
Thanks! Hope you get to jump in here and there!
Wishing you much success on your effort. Reading is a great gift and those who read never tire of it!
Agreed, and thank you so much!
What a fun challenge! Good luck! Jess at Just Jess
Thanks!
I just came across your reading challenge (from your latest reading progress post via MMD). I love open-ended ones like this. I created my own for Scandinavian picks. It’s a great way to keep your reading going and open your mind to new books and authors!
Yes! I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I love seeing what different people choose for each category. I’ll have to check out your challenge!
