Hello, fellow bookworms! I hope April is treating you well and bringing you many great reads. This month has been full of change and busyness in my world, and my reading time has become more scarce and consequently more precious.
So precious, in fact, that I actually abandoned my April reading challenge book choice (Leaves of Grass), and I did it pretty quickly. I just wasn’t liking it, but I didn’t want to quit without giving poetry in general a fair shot so I picked up a few other poets to try, thinking it might just be Walt Whitman’s style. Here’s what I discovered about my poetry tastes:
I DO NOT like free-verse poetry (ex: Walt Whitman)
I DO like poetry that rhymes (ex: Emily Dickenson)
I DO like poetry that tells a story (ex: Edgar Allen Poe)
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on poetry, and since this post is supposed to be about what I’m currently reading, I digress.
Just Finished:
I reviewed this one last week, and it was ok, but not great. You can read my full review here, but basically I thought it didn’t meet the expectations I had at the beginning of the story. It wasn’t to my taste, but it was objectively well-written and I’m sure it will appeal to others.
In Progress:
First Ladies: Presidential Historians on the Lives of 45 Iconic American Women
For those of you who are keeping score, yes I am still working on my March reading challenge choice. I hope to finish it in the next few days so I don’t have to renew it again, but who can say if the reading fates will be with me. It’s an interesting book and I really want to finish it, so I don’t know why it’s been getting pushed aside more than is fair.
I love Regina Jennings! This one has been on my shelf for a long time and I have been in some sort of strange phase of self-denial, waiting for the right time to read it. I have decided the time is now, and I’m super happy about it.
Up Next:
This book is Sarah E. Ladd’s newest, just released this week. It’s been a while since I’ve read anything from this author, but I enjoyed her Whispers on the Moore series so I’m excited to dig into The Weaver’s Daughter as soon as finish my Jennings book.
Thanks to Modern Mrs. Darcy for hosting a quick lit link up! If you want to see what even more bloggers are reading right now, go check her out.
Good for you for figuring out more about your poetry tastes! You’re totally right–it’s not worth sticking with something that doesn’t work for you.
I actually…have no idea what my taste in poetry is. I really never read it (I can’t believe I set you on a challenge I’m not willing to do myself right now!). I should pick some up, though, and start getting a taste for what I like. What better time than National Poetry Month?
I didn’t even know it was National Poetry Month! Lol
I must admit my bedside table is empty right now. I keep postponing my visit to the library. But I really want to read the First ladies.
Veronika
It’s very interesting! I have been surprised by how many First Ladies really didn’t want their husbands to be president.
Haha! I have the same feeling towards poetry. Those that are too deep loses me. I just don’t understand them sometimes. It’s been a long time since I’ve read for pleasure but these look like great suggestions!
Thanks! I’ve never been super into poetry, but every now and then I give it a try to see if I’m wiser and able to read it now lol.
I read a book a month in 2017 and loved it! I got busy in January and never got started on 2018 so I’m way behind. I have several on the waiting list and need to open one stat!
That’s cool! Some people like to just read as the mood strikes but I find it’s easier to have some kind of goals or plan in place to make sure my books don’t get pushed aside.
What a great book review. i need to get back to reading
Its one of my favorite things!
All of these books sound so interesting! I’m excited to check them out!
Awesome!
That’s a perfect way to sum up how I feel about poetry too! Free verse is just not for me. I can’t really tell, but is Regina Jennings more chick lit or romance? I’m always on the lookout for new chick lit authors.
I would say more chick lit in tone, but keep in mind she writes historicals so they might not fit what people typically think of as chick lit (twenty-something career woman trying to make a career and life for herself in the big city). Regina Jennings is one of my favorites though! Hope that helps!
Way to go for abandoning something you know just isn’t right for you. I used to struggle with giving up on a book but am getting better about it the older I get. I would like to read more poetry, because right now I have no idea what kind I prefer!
I used to be a die hard finisher too, but have adjusted my thinking on that subject as I’ve aged 🙂
