This book, you guys! As an avid reader and aspiring home chef, this Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish was right up my ally. And not only does the topic reflect one of my favorite things (delicious food, in case you weren’t paying attention), it’s also super stinking funny! The interactions between Hadley and Max are so witty and real, and their chemistry is great.
Another thing that I really liked is that the book mostly takes place in Nashville, the capital of my beloved home state of Tennessee. There are references to real places like the Pancake Pantry, the Grand Ole’ Opry, and my personal favorite, Five Daughters Bakery. They have the very, very best 100 layer donuts, and that’s a fact. I’m not sure where Bethany Turner is from, but I really liked that she immersed her characters in the true to life atmosphere of Nashville.
My favorite character was definitely Hadley. In my mind I was picturing and hearing a 30 year old Ree Drummond throughout the whole book. Her southern charm and love of sophisticated comfort food and reasonable portion sizes warms my heart. Don’t get me wrong, Hadley has her own baggage and personal issues, but she is so genuine and warm that it’s hard not to love her.
This is the second book I’ve read from this author. I read The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck earlier this year and fell in love with Bethany Turner’s writing style, so when I had the opportunity to request of a copy of Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish I jumped on it like a duck on a June bug. Next on my list is Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, and I can’t wait!
