Whipped Coffee 3 Ways

3 jars of whipped coffee

As far as new trends go, I’m totally on board with the whipped coffee fad that is sweeping the nation. I think coffee is one of the best kinds of treats, and I love the flavor and texture of whipped coffee. It’s really pretty simple to make, and requires very few ingredient and no special equipment. In case you are new to this idea, you pour milk over ice and top with a combination of instant coffee, sugar, and water that has been whipped into a fluffy coffee cloud. Sounds pretty good, right?

It’s simple but delicious — and I think I found the secret that really pushes it to the next level.

What’s my secret? I’m glad you asked! My secret is to jazz up the milk. Instead of using just plain old milk, avail yourself of some add ins! This gives you lots of options. My favorite is plain-Jane vanilla flavored milk, but you can also stir in caramel sauce or chocolate syrup to mix things up. I think part of the reason this works for me is because I really like my coffee to be sweet and flavorful. I’m not a purist who takes hot, black coffee shots every morning. Recipes that have keywords like ‘mocha’, ‘caramel’, ‘cookie crumbles’, or ‘whipped cream’ are the ones that catch my eye.

One funny story about whipped coffee and then I’ll get to the recipe. When I first started seeing people posting pictures of their whipped coffee on social media I was really confused, and frankly a little disgusted. Why? Because I thought that creamy brown stuff in the top of the cup was peanut butter and I was appalled that people were putting peanut butter on top of their coffee, because gross. But then I started to actually read the captions…and now I’m on board.

Course: Drinks
Keyword: coffee
Servings: 1
Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee crystals
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp hot water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup ice
Instructions
  1. Measure coffee crystals, sugar, and hot water into a large bowl and beat at medium speed for about 4-5 minutes, until soft peaks form. The color will lighten from a dark to a golden brown as you beat. Mix together the milk, vanilla, and sugar, and then pour over ice. Top the milk with the whipped mixture and enjoy.

  2. Alternate Flavor Options:

    1. Make as descibed, but lightly stir 1-2 tablespoons of caramel sauce into the milk before topping with coffee.

    2. Make as descibed, but lightly stir 2-3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup into the milk before topping with coffee (Hershey's Special Dark is my favorite).

    • If you don’t love coffee I don’t know if you would love this, because the coffee flavor in the whipped part is pretty strong. Maybe you could cut the coffee crystals in half and try it that way?
