November Book Choice – 2018 Reading Challenge

The year is wrapping up and we only have two more months to go in the 2018 reading challenge. November is always a busy reading month for me because in addition to the hordes of books that are already calling my name from my ever-growing TBR, I also try to cram in as many Christmas/Winter books as possible for my annual Christmas book list.  That will be coming out the first week of December, so keep an eye out for it and you can always look at the list from last year or even the year before if you want to get a head start on your holiday reading in the meantime.

All that seasonal reading has me glad the the reading challenge theme for November has nothing to do with the holidays. The prompt for this month is:

A book set in the future.

I have two books in mind that fit this criteria, The Passage by Justin Cronin and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Both are appealing for different reasons and have wildly different descriptions. I couldn’t choose so I borrowed both from the library just in case I end up with time to finish both.

The Passage (which is going to be tv show soon, apparently) follows a government agent who changes sides and hides a little girl who could potentially provide the cure for a virus that is turning people into something akin to vampires. This sounds a little like I Am Legend to me and I enjoyed that movie so The Passage seems like a good fit. It is pretty long though, at just under 900 pages, which is why I will probably end up reading the other book.

Book choice #2 is Delirium. This book is a dystopian young adult novel about a future society that has eliminated complications by finding the ‘cure’ for love. When young adults reach the age of 18 they are ‘fixed’ so that they no longer experience symptoms of this emotion and Lena is all ready to undergo the procedure – until she meets a boy named Alex who flies under the government’s radar and challenges her thinking on following the crowd. At right around 400 pages this Delirium is a much more likely fit into my crowded reading schedule this month, although I’m going to try my hardest to fit them both in if I can.

What book would you choose for this month’s theme? Do you like books set in the future or prefer to stay grounded in reality?

  1. OMG I loved Delirium, I read it a few years ago! From the same author another nice one is Before I Fall, I literally finally saw the movie last week but of course the book is better! Can’t wait to hear what you think of Delirium though!
